THEO STOOD and listened to Graham’s instructions. The power and confidence he exuded reflected a natural leader. His commands brooked no arguments, but what surprised her was that he was willing to engage others and hear their opinions. Did he garner everyone’s trust with such ease?

Theo remained on the sidelines, watching the ladies attempt to perfect the maneuver. Her thoughts were on Graham, who was circling the group and issuing instructions. As he repositioned one of the ladies, Theo’s gaze fell to his hands. She recalled his slight lingering touches and longed for them to be alone.

Over the course of their brief acquaintance, there had been moments where they seemed able to anticipate each other’s thoughts and actions. Knowing he, too, shared a similar duty to the Crown created a bond stronger than she could have imagined with someone she had only met a few days ago. Were these strange feelings for Graham the result of that bond, or was there something else causing them?

Her gaze fell upon Lucy, who was frowning while absently rubbing her stomach. She could see her friend was itching to jump into the foray of activity and was frustrated at her inability to participate. Surprisingly, Lucy allowed Graham to take the lead. She looked closer at her friend, and it was evident that Lucy trusted and admired Graham as a leader. Few gained such unwavering loyalty from her best friend.

Theo wouldn’t learn from watching. She joined a group of ladies working with Evan. Lucy was indeed lucky to have a man as fine as him in her employ. Theo’s gaze wandered back to Graham. Their gazes locked for a moment, and all thoughts of Evan were immediately forgotten. Would he be as fine-looking as Evan without his shirt? No, the outline of his body showed signs of indulgence. But she was still curious to see what lay beneath his shirt.

Graham crossed the room. “Shall we practice?”

Theo let him guide her through various maneuvers. After several adjustments, she was able to execute each with finesse.

“Let’s regroup next week,” Lucy called out.

How long had they been training? Not once had Graham appeared frustrated, lost his patience, or rushed her.

Sweaty and tired, each maid and footman thanked Graham for his time, patience, and knowledge. He appeared as physically exhausted as Theo, but he praised each and every one as they left, giving each specific and individualized praise. They had all improved significantly. She could not help but admire his abilities. Not only did she respect him, but she was also beginning to care for him. She had to be careful not to actually fall in love with the man.

After everyone else had left, Theo approached Graham. “My lord, thank you for a most educational afternoon.”

She caught a glimmer of mischief in his gaze. “It was an honor, my lady. You are a very quick study, and I look forward to being invited to next week’s gathering.”

Surely she would see him before next week. Would he be at Lady
